A Prequel to God of War

Chains of Olympus is a prequel to the God of War that takes place ten years before the original God of War 1 in which Kratos fight against Ares, kills him, and becomes the new God of War. You will play as a younger Kratos who is a Spartan warrior, bound by the service to the Olympian gods. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom is one of them.

Facing off Against Mythical Monsters

It features a diverse range of monstrous enemies including mythical monsters like cyclopes, satyrs, harpies, Cerberus, Medusa, and minotaurs. The cyclopes are one-eyed giants with immense strength and aggressive nature. Light attacks don’t have any impact on their movements. The harpies are bird-like creatures that attack with their sharp claws and high-pitched piercing cries. They are very agile. One harpy isn’t strong, but in groups, they are so irritating, can deal significant damage, and prevent Kratos from completing critical tasks & unleashing powerful combos.

Satrys, half-goat & half-man creatures, are the most ruthless enemies that can easily flank Kratos and attack with quick strikes. Kratos’ hack-and-slash combat using his double-chained blades, the Blades of Chaos, is his signature fighting style. You can unlock many powerful and special blade attacks with brutal combos. There are also other weapons like Sun Shield and Gauntlet of Zeus, including powerful spells like Poseidon’s Rage and Zeus’ Fury.

Kratos can block attacks, deflect projectiles, and parry enemies’ attacks using the Sun Shield. While the Gauntlet of Zeus, with the power of Zeus, allows him to use ranged attacks. These are also upgradable, allowing you to unlock various combos & special attacks.

QTEs, Puzzles, and Exploration

The game is not just about blindly hacking and slashing the enemies. There are also puzzles, hidden secrets, quick-time events, and environmental challenges. Unlike other games where you chip away at the enemy’s HP till zero HP to kill it, GoW features quick-time events. In boss fights or specific monster fights, after dealing a certain amount of damage, the game triggers a QTE in which you need to press specific buttons in sequence to progress the fight. Environmental and mechanical puzzles are also the essence of God of War. Simply running ahead won’t take you to your destination. There will be many puzzles you need to solve to unlock the path. Various locations need certain items and abilities. Moving platforms, requiring precise jumps & grappling hooks add another layer of challenges to the gameplay.
